Worlds Most Expensive Area Rug

In 2008 this rug was sold for a whopping $4,450,000!

This makes this the world most expensive area rug. The rug is credited to be an Ishafan Silk rug dating to the 1600's

Part of the reason why it sold for such a high value is because it was in great shape for its age. It is fully in tact with almost no end loss at all.

Silk Area Rug and Doggy Accidents

One of our customers called in really worried because her dog got sick and had a major accident on her beautiful silk handwoven Persian rug.

This rug was a very valuable one and she was concerned that it would not be able to be fix. She sent the rug into our shop for our deep area rug cleaning process and specialty stain removal treatment.

She was very pleased with the results of the cleaning and we were able to restore her rug to pristine condition. No sign of the stains whatsoever!

Persian Rug Cleaning in NYC is a skill and should not attempted by someone who does not have the sufficient knowledge and experience. Attempting to clean this rug improperly would have possibly set the stain and made it that much more difficult to get it out.

Area Rugs - How to Properly Store Them

One of our customers recently called in saying that their rug has been attacked by moths and they desperately needed our help. When we got to her home, we took a look at the damage and determined that it rug was far to deteriorated for anyone to be able to fix.

The best we could do was cut off a piece and rebind repair and clean the oriental rug, saving approximately 40% of the rug.

This was a severe case of not understanding the dangers of improper rug storage, so we thought we would share some information that may come in handy.

When storing rugs ALWAYS,  make sure you have the rug cleaned by a professional first! A dirty rug carries lots of dust, bacteria, dead skin cells, and small food particles. This will no doubt, attract many unwanted critters to the rug and you can be in for a big shock when you unravel it.

Always, wrap a clean rug in acid free breathable paper. This will keep it safe from any outside elements and also allow the rug to breathe. Natural fibers such as wool, naturally retain a moisture content. If you wrap these rugs in plastic bags, there is no where for the moisture content to go and over time it will build up and you can create a mildew problem for the rug. Acid free paper will keep it dry and safe.

Store rugs in a cool and dry environment. Basements are not a good location to store your area rugs because  they often times become very humid. The same goes for attics. An overly humid environment can cause the rug to absorb much of the water from the air and this can create odor issues.

When rolling your rugs, always roll with the nap, the long way. You dont want to fold the rug because this can create pile damage if left for extended periods of time.

As an added protection you can opt for moth proofing your rug. We always recommend moth proofing your area rugs when you plan on placing them in storage. This will deter any moths who may view your area rug as a pleasant treat :P

So to sum it all up in 5 steps:
1. Clean the rug before placing in storage
2. Use breathable acid free paper to wrap
3. Store in a cool and dry environment
4. Roll with the nap
5. Opt for a moth proofing treatment.

We hope this helps for anyone who might be thinking about placing their rugs in storage. Follow these steps and you can rest assured your rugs will make it through the storage period gracefully!

Who Are You Sleeping With Tonight??

Are you sleeping with this guy tonight?

Dust mites are the main culprit for allergy sufferers. The bedroom is particularly vulnerable for allergy sufferers as we spend one-third of our life in bed. We shed skin cells constantly which is what the dust mites feed on.

These skin cells are shedding into our sleeping environment, collected by upholstery, mattresses, area rugs and carpeting. All of these areas our ideal breading  grounds for the house dust mite.

Did you know that you get 100,000 dead bodies and thirty million pieces of feces added to your home every single day? A dust mites feces carries withing it certain digestive enzymes which is a significant cause in allergies, emphysema, wheezing and skin/eye irritation.

In order to remove these dust mites, and their dead bodies, and there feces, a deep hot water extraction carpet and upholstery cleaning is recommended.

Regular vacuuming will only remove a very small percentage of them, whereas a high heat deep steam cleaning can drastically lessen an allergic reaction to these unwanted critters.

In large metropolitan cities, dust mites are an even bigger problem. With such a large population living in a small confined space, there is an overload of dead skin cells everywhere, which provides the food and nourishment for a dust mite colony. Our carpet cleaning NYC specialists will do everything they can to help fight against these critters.

Do not share your home with unwanted guests! Call PureGreen today and schedule a deep cleaning of your fabrics and textiles.

Improper Silk Rug Cleaning - Color Run

We get calls all the time from customers who had their rugs destroyed due to improper cleaning methods. Sometimes the damage is so bad that even we cannot fix it 100%.

The fact of the matter is that any handwoven area rug should NEVER be cleaned in your house. Any professional with knowledge about oriental rugs will agree. There are just way to many things that can go wrong. Rug Cleaning in NY is a major part of our business and we offer a free pickup and delivery service for all area rugs which will be cleaned in our state of the art facility.

Below is an example of a beautiful Silk Persian Rug that is very delicate and valuable. The customer who brought it to us had another company clean the rug in her home the same way you would have wall to wall carpeting cleaned. Needless to say, they caused a huge mess. As you can see the dyes on this rug were not stabilized and they bled everywhere. You can barely see the beautiful Ivory Silk patterns anymore because they have been compromised with red dye.

Also, this rug has received significant pile damage. The silk fibers of this rug were over wet and not groomed or dried properly and left very stiff patches which have lost their luster and shine. This may not be reversed.

Hand woven rugs, (especially silk) need to be cleaned in a controlled environment, tested for colorfastness, dried properly and with the right solutions/techniques. Our customer was very upset that her rug received this damage and we will try our best to clean up after the mistake made by the other cleaner.

Although the rug may never look as good as it once did, we can hope for an improvement of about 70-80% in appearance. Moral of the story, Oriental Rug Cleaning NYC should never be done in home.

High Traffic Lanes

Regular upkeep of your carpets is essential if you want to make them last. Often times the dirtiest areas in a home will be the hallways because these are considered high traffic lanes.

Carpet Cleaning should be done at least once a year in order to avoid excessive wear and tear on your traffic lanes. A neglected high traffic lane can look rather unsightly if not maintained properly. Regular vacuuming every day is essential and hiring a professional carpet cleaning company once a year should keep your traffic lanes looking neat and fresh all year round.

Below is an example of a high traffic lane we cleaned recently. This customer let the traffic lanes build up for too long and ended up with highly visible marks on the carpet. Our Staten Island Carpet Cleaning technicians explained to the customer that since the carpet has been neglected for so long that achieving "like new" results will not be possible but we will do our best.

The end result was a far cleaner carpet and the customer was super happy, but the effects of excessive wear and tear on the carpet will always be visible no matter how much you clean it.

Deep Cleaning Area Rugs

Many people are unaware or uneducated on the proper methods of cleaning area rugs. In order to provide a thorough cleaning and flushing of an area rug, the rug must be taken out to a rug cleaning facility that has the knowledge and expertise in handling exotic rugs.

Cleaning an area rug in your home is not the right way to do it. This is more of a surface cleaning and can result in several problems. Firstly, the rug is not being washed thoroughly. Because it is virtually impossible to soak the rug in your home, many toxins, dust, allergens, odors and bacteria are being left behind after the cleaning.

Secondly, cleaning rugs in your home means you have to deal with a wet rug. Most area rugs are made of wool, which is a very absorbent fiber. Wool retains a natural moisture content and will act as a sponge to any water that is applied to it. Not getting it dry quickly can result in mildew/odor problems for your rug.

Lastly, cleaning an exotic rug in your home means you are taking a huge risk. Rugs are very delicate items made from natural fibers and dyes which can become damaged if not using the correct protective procedures during the cleaning process.

We recommend using our safe and thorough deep cleaning approach when it is time to clean your area rugs. Below is a video we made that shows are entire cleaning process in detail. Next time you need your area rugs cleaned in New York give us a call and we will provide you with a free inspection!
